Wantage Silver Band

Following its birth as a small youth group in 1972, Wantage Silver Band is now one of the largest organisations of its kind in the UK, with more than 150 players of various ages and abilities.

The 'A' Band competes in the 1st Section of the National Championships, registered within the London and Southern Counties area (reaching the National Finals in 2005) and enters other contests within reasonable travelling range (including Pontins at Prestatyn).

The 'B' Band enters the annual 4th Section area contest and other occasional events. Great emphasis is placed on youth development within the organisation, with a Youth Band, and two junior Training Bands while 'late developers' are also catered for by an Adult Beginners group.

Over the 30+ years of its existence, WSB has contributed several members of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Apart from gaining recognition through contesting, the different groups within the band play their own parts, according to ability, in providing entertainment in the local area and further a field at concerts and summer fetes, etc. They also support civic events and lead parades for organisations such as Scouts/Guides and the Royal British Legion, for example.
