The Menai Bridge Band was formed in the 1890s and continues to promote music in the local community today. With over 60 players of all ages and abilities, the band provides the opportunity for many people to learn an instrument and has been a starting point for many musical careers.
In 2002, the conducting team of Gavin Saynor and Chris Williams was appointed and the success of this partnership being almost immediate! The band competed in the National Brass Band Championship Finals for the first time in over 10 years and since then, have have also become National Eisteddfod Champions and North Wales Champions. This success in contests has now meant promotion to the next section for competing.
Recently, the band have had the honour of performing for HM The Queen as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations as well as other Royal visits from Prince Charles, Prince William and the Duke of Kent. But it's not just performing for Royalty either -other performances include LLanelli Scarlets Rugby Team, the Wales U19 Rugby Team and various charity events supporting the RNLI, The Rotary Club and Ysbyty Gwynedd's Alaw Ward and various other organisations.
A successful Youth policy means that over half the players in the Senior Band have come through the ranks from the Junior and Intermediate levels, with many now playing at County and National Ensemble levels and has been the stepping stone for some to progress further and study music at University with past members including Glyn Williams, now Solo Euphonium with the Fodens Richardson Band and Arfon Owen, 1st Horn with the Black Dyke Band. This successful policy was recognized by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation with the Band being awarded the W.S Gwyn Williams Award in 2003.
