What qualifications do you need to be a conductor?
You do not need any qualifications to be a conductor - anyone can call themselves a conductor. However, there are a number of things you can ask for or look for if you are trying to appoint a new conductor. These include…
- Being a member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors. This organisation holds regular workshops and meetings for brass band conductors.
- Musical education. Music degrees, MAs and diplomas that specialise in conducting are now widely available, with some institutions specifically offering brass band conducting as an option.
- Experience. One of the most important aspects of being a conductor is experience, as it is an art form that cannot be learned merely from text books or studying others. Look at the conducting experience a person has had and their general brass band experiences - bands they played in, any adjudicating they have done etc.
- Teaching qualifications and experience. This may be particularly appropriate if you are looking for conductor for a youth band.
If you any have children in your band you may also need to consider obtaining a check from the Criminal Records Bureau for your conductor and other adult helpers. The following sites may be able to help:
